May 30th - The blackberries are beginning to blossom. Say that 5 times fast.
May 28th - It looks like there are plenty of greenberries, er...I mean blueberries. They are very sour now, but in a few weeks, they will be soooo sweeeet.
May 24th - Luis is thinning nectarines. There are so many on the trees now. If we let all of them grow, they would be the size of golf balls. The workers take off some now so the remaining nectarines will grow to a large size.
May 21st - It's hard to believe, but these sticks will be full bearing blueberry plants in about 3 years. They are placed one inch apart in a mixture of sand and peat moss. They will grow in the cutting bed for one year. Then next year, around the end of April, they will be planted in the ground.
May 18th - Pie Cherries - Still another 4 or 5 weeks until they are ready.
May 17th - April showers bring May flowers, but may showers bring...mud puddles!
April 29th
Our motto is, "Look for the Orange Windmill" not "Look for the Semi-Orange Windmill." It's time to paint the windmill.
We are scraping off the old paint before we add any new paint. There was a lot of it.
This is the view from the top of the windmill. Do you recognize the blueberry field? Can you see any bees buzzing around the hives?
Mr. Mood is oiling the windmill before we lower ourselves to the ground. Now that it is painted, we want to make sure it turns smoothly too.
Ta da!! The freshly-painted windmill!! Looks like new again!
April 15th
Here is a brief lesson on how to trim a one-year-old nectarine tree. When the trees were planted last year, they were painted white. All of the brown limbs are new growth over the past year.
Picture 1: Ideally, you want to have four main branches spreading out in opposite directions. Once they are found, cut out the middle of the tree.
Picture 2: Cut off the branches at the bottom of the tree. There shouldn't be branches close to the ground.
Picture 3: Cut off some more wayward branches.
Picture 4: The finished tree! It looks a lot different from the first picture doesn't it?
